State of Virginia Department of Transportation Customer Dashboard Online and Working - a must visit for enterprise dashboarders

Dashboard Screenshots published on March 6, 2006. The Virginia Department of Transportation has an enterprise dashboard online for all to see at http://dashboard.virginiadot.org/default.aspx. Note the hover-over display of section content descriptions. This is a valuable resource for us dashboarders as you can actually use this thing! Try it out and see if you like the solutions they chose. What's even more impressive, however, is that the State of Virginia is letting its citizens monitor their tax and bond dollars at work. A great example of customer collaboration through an enterprise dashboard.

This first dashboard screenshot lays out a series of gauges showing KPIs for engineering, construction, maintenance, operations, safety, finance and environment.

Homework: This is an excellent example of what is known as a customer dashboard. Did you know that there are six major types of dashboards according to Malik, author of Enterprise Dashboards: Design and Best Practices for IT. They are Enterprise Performance Dashboards, Divisional Dashboards, Process/Activity Monitoring Dashboards, Custom Applications Dashboards, Customer Dashboards and Vendor Dashboards. The dashboard type diagram from the book shows each type's sub-categories. The Dashboard Spy dashboard categories are a little more numerous and slightly more arbitrary.

So what or who is The Dashboard Spy? As his about page states, The Dashboard Spy is just a guy interested in the design of enterprise dashboards. He could not find any executive dashboard design source books (or even screenshots of real business dashboards) and so set about creating his own. Finally convinced to post his extensive collection of dashboard screenshots online, he was amazed to find how popular it has become. If you have a nice screenshot of a digital dashboard, balanced scorecard, or any business intelligence graphic to share, please send an email to info _at_ dashboardspy.com. Also check out The Dashboard Spy's favorite books.
