Dashboard Screenshots published on April 26, 2006. If I mention the phrase "traffic monitoring", you probably think of network traffic. But what about automobile traffic? The California Transportation department and UCLA at Berkeley put together a few years back the Freeway Performance Evaluation Monitoring System. These are screenshots of the dashboards that show data about the freeway systems in major metropolitan areas.
This first screenshot shows some interesting graphs. In the miles traveled chart, the green color shows actuals and the red shows projected. My question is why overwrite the projected with the actual and not show both? Don't you want to see actuals versus the projections? The bottom graphs show the performance of the detectors out on the highways.

I'm not even going to pretend to understand these next few screenshots. Traffic management is truly a black art. It's akin to fluid dynamics modeling, I suppose.

Homework: Traffic flow modeling, whether on a highway road, or in a water pipe, or even on a communications network, is fascinating to study. If you want to read up more on how to optimize our roadways, check out these books on traffic engineering and analysis.

So what or who is The Dashboard Spy? As his about page states, The Dashboard Spy is just a guy interested in the design of enterprise dashboards. He could not find any executive dashboard design source books (or even screenshots of real business dashboards) and so set about creating his own. Finally convinced to post his extensive collection of dashboard screenshots online, he was amazed to find how popular it has become. If you have a nice screenshot of a digital dashboard, balanced scorecard, or any business intelligence graphic to share, please send an email to info _at_ dashboardspy.com.
